“What a great idea!” is most people’s reaction, and we think it is too! Here at Christianhood we have a strong ethos to support mission through our sales and everyday work. So far, the method of our support has been through financially supporting people involved in mission or training, but this year we thought, why not support mission in a real practical way at Christmas by using our very own products?
After a phone call to my fiancée one afternoon we were chatting about ideas of what to do this Christmas with our products that we have and he came up with the great idea of “Hoodies for the homeless”.
We thought about what we could do, how we would do it and we went for it! I was so excited about this project and through all the things that has happened, it is exciting to know God is working in and through this idea. Three charities that we are working with is Aslan All Souls London, Touching Lives Belfast and Food Bank Bangor.
Our project is that our team individually wrap 200 hoodies, add in a Christmas gospel booklet called “Christmas in Three words” by Vaughn Roberts and have these given out to homeless people this Christmas.
We choose to work with Christian charities that already have regular contact with homeless people, so we could support them in the work that they are doing. It took some effort to get in touch with different charities and to get a charity that was willing to allow us to put the gospel booklets in the packages. After a few downhearted calls and feeling like our excitement about this project was fading away, one final Friday morning I made phone calls to the charities above, who not only were very happy to receive the products with the gospel booklets, but the phone call could not have come at a better time! One lady was about to go out that afternoon to order some cheaper hats and scarfs as presents as funds were low, one other lady had no idea how she was going to afford to give a gift to the homeless people this year, as her charity shop has closed in the past due to low funds, and was praying the night before about what she was going to do! It was amazing to hear the relief in their voices and hear their stories of the work they do and we are just so excited to see how God is using a very practical product that we sell every day to be an answer to other people’s prayers. Also we pray that through the booklets “Christmas in Three words” God will let people see the real reason that Christmas exists, that we have a greater gift of Jesus, what he was born to do and through practical love of giving them a hoodie, they will hear of a greater love that Jesus has for everyone of us!
So look out for our hoodies over London, Belfast and Bangor and join us in praying that God will really work through this project to bless and encourage those who are already working with homeless people, but also homeless people will hear something of Jesus and who He is…”the real reason for the season” as some would say!
